Thankful Thursdays – Energy and Enthusiasm

I love the sunshine! It is almost like I’m a solar-powered battery when spring exchanges cloudy days for blue sky and golden beams.

My energy led me outside to view the damage from winter’s wrath (and yes, there’s more to come).  Our beautiful blue spruce died over the fall and winter, so I’ll cut it down over the next month.  I’m going to leave the trunk high enough to hold a tabletop and use it as a picnic area or just an outside spot to share ice tea and cookies with company. I’m thankful to have so much room outside.

Yikes, there's a lot to do this spring!
I took this picture of a raven quite upset about his spring and summer home no longer offering shelter and shade. The sheen of his feathers shows even in the picture. Did you know ravens live to be 30 years old? I thought perhaps he was a descendant of the huge birds that have hung around at least the 15 years we’ve been here. Perhaps he’s one of the original tenants of that tree.

He is thankful because he spotted another large tree with leaves sprouting out towards the back of the property. Ravens aren’t very social, so this will give him a place close enough to find food and water while minimizing his contact with people and other animals.

The first step is to get rid of the weeds and start my garden. Setting aside an hour a day during the cool of the morning is a schedule that works for me. I have several large trash cans to put weeds and wrecked items into.

Do you have any special bird or animal that returns to your property or neighborhood?

  1. We have a lot of different birds that come back after the winter. I don't really know the species of all of them, but they're gorgeous.

  2. You know, I hate to admit this, but I'm not sure what stays and what goes during the winter. I just know I love to see whatever is scurrying around outside when I look out the window.

  4. I love watching the birds come and go into my yard. I get ravens every now and then too. They're incredibly intelligent but they like to scare the other birds away!

  5. We just moved in to a new place last summer, so this is our first spring. It will be interesting to see what shows up this year, compared to our old house that was 30 minutes away. I'm impressed that you're going to cut the tree down!

  6. No special animals that come back here. Not unless you count the neighborhood cat!

    1. Shell, you have me laughing so hard about the neighborhood cat. We have a few of those around here, too.

  7. I actually have an irrational fear of birds, so I steer clear. I do like that spring is coming SOON.

    1. I have a huge fear of birds as well. It is embarrassing but I will run like a psycho even from a little sparrow.

  8. I live in a city without a real winter or snow, so home and yard damage from the elements is something that is foreign to me. We have spotted hummingbirds, mourning doves and owls around our neighborhood!

  9. Every spring and summer, we have a set of tree frogs that return outside our home. They like to get close to the house and eat the bugs attracted by the house lights.

  11. Our plum tree is starting to get blooms on it, and it brings me so much joy. Mainly I am rejoicing because I didn't kill it!

  12. I love my hometown. We are one of few backyard wildlife habitats and we have the most beautiful birds. I've seen more deer here than in the country. I love it.

  18. We have Canadian geese that come back every spring. I kind of think they are annoying though and wish they would stay South all year long :)

  20. The snow is finally all melted and the birds are checking the feeders for treats. A lot of our garden is still covered in tarps and will stay that way for a few more weeks. It's nice to see the sunshine.

  22. I have a special neighborhood cat that loves to tear up my outdoor furniture. LOL But coupled with that even given time we can see an array of birds perched on our fence.

  23. We have lots of squirrels and rabbits, and the occasional deer, as well as racoons, and usually at least once a year a coyote. And today we had tons of birds in our yard. The last 2 days it rained all day and although dreary here today, the rain finally stopped so the birds were looking for food (we keep plenty of bird feeders out).
