Batter Up! It’s Opening Day for Team Trash Talking

4-13-09 Opening Day at Dodger Stadium against San Francisco Giants

Don’t you love the TV shows and movies where every family member and friend gathers around the set to cheer for one team?

OOPS! Somehow that gene skipped the family and friends I know and love. Usually there’s no problem until the playoffs approach and our personal teams are in tough competition. April 13, 2009 was opening day between my BIL’s team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and my very best favorite, the San Francisco Giants.

The BIL (proud ‘former’ Marine) mellowed as Marine and Navy personnel marched the flag out before the game. I think his blood is Dodger Blue. He was definitely pleased to see the Giants get stomped 11 – 1. I wasn’t too happy with the score, but he reminded me it’s to be expected when his team plays. No humility there!

Of course, I was the epitome of kindness when the Giants won the World Series against the Kansas City Royals in 2014 (notice there is no mention of the Dodgers for that series?)

My younger sister, first and foremost, is a San Diego Padre fan. Interestingly enough, the Dodgers host the Padres on Opening Day, April 6, 2015. She may have to watch the game on the spare TV rather than the main one. It’s hard to look sympathetic when your team is beating her hubby’s favorite.

Meanwhile, the Giants travel to challenge the Arizona Diamondbacks. It’s time to call the cousins in Phoenix and throw in my two cents worth about why the Giants should sweep the series. I’m sure I’ll get an earful about why SF may as well stay home and forfeit the games.

Is your team a family favorite or do you celebrate diversity, as well?

  1. We celebrate diversity in our home - UNLESS it's sports. Then we're all totally on the same team.

  5. Whew, we've got so many team affiliations in the house even we lose track. It's not unusual for my hubby to be sporting rival teams at the same time (like his MSU sweatshirt with his UM sweatpants, lol). He went to both schools. :)

  6. I've never been in to baseball but my hubby and son go often here in Toronto! I'm sure they are thrilled that it's coming back!

  8. Its funny I was in a baseball league when I was 4 on an all baseball league. Staying that to say that was the last time I was into baseball...but in Atlanta they are moving our Turner Field stadium for the Braves to a bigger area so that is exciting!

  11. I grew up in a different state than what I live in now. So we are a house divided. My husband and in laws tend to root for a different team then what my family does. lol
